Holiday Spiced Bourbon Apple Cider Recipe

January 7, 2018

I know this is a bit late, but I wanted to get it on this website while it’s still nice and chilly outside. This is the perfect drink for these cold winter nights. There’s cider, just enough bourbon, spices and fruit. This is one marvelous drink indeed.

The Recipe

I really didn’t know what to expect from this drink. I’ve had spiced beverages before and most of them were okay, but when I tasted this one, I was very pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure which combination of ingredients caused this, but it actually tasted like there was honey in there. It could be the lemon and the bourbon that did it. Possibly a few more things. Either way, it’s smooth, sweet and very tasty. There’s a hint of lemon along with a lot of apple. And it’s hot. Did I mention that it’s hot?

Ingredients

Serves: 4

4 Cups Apple Cider
1/2 Cup Bourbon
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Allspice
1 Teaspoon White Granulated Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
3 Lemon Slices
1 Apple, Cored and Sliced Thin
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
4 Cinnamon Sticks as Garnish

Step-by-Step Instructions

I’d like to thank Taste of the South Magazine for this recipe. I found it online and I have to tell you that their website is chock full of incredible looking recipes. Give it a once over to see if anything appeals to you.

Combine Ingredients

Warm a medium sized saucepan over medium heat. Then, add all the ingredients in this recipe, except for the cinnamon sticks, to the pot.

Simmer Ingredients

Wait for the liquid to come to a soft boil. Raise the heat slightly if you need to, but be sure not to let the contents of the pot boil too rapidly. Once it begins to boil, lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot and let simmer for 30 minutes. Doing this will break down the fruit and really combine all the flavors of the drink.

Strain & Serve

After the drink simmers on the stove top, you’ll need to strain it. I used a very fine screened coffee strainer and you can use the same thing. You can use a funnel, along with a coffee filter as well. Anything that’s extremely fine and that will filter out the ground spices is good.

Strain the contents of the pot into a medium sized bowl. Then, using a ladle, divide the liquid between mugs and add a cinnamon stick to each. Serve while hot and enjoy!

The Final Spiced Bourbon & Apple Cider Drink

This was a relatively simple recipe to prepare and I have to say that it’s the perfect winter after-dinner drink to enjoy near a fireplace or a wood stove. I sat near mine last night and things were just perfect. If you decide to give this one a try, please let me know how it turned out in the comment section down below. Thanks for reading!

About Jay Gaulard

My name is Jay Gaulard and I'm what I like to call an "inexperienced chef," if that's not an oxymoron. I initially decided to immerse myself into the world of food and cooking in May of 2015, when I began growing, in earnest, my first garden. The garden produced a wonderful yield and with some newfound confidence, my hobby of learning about what I eat took shape. Currently, I'm enrolled in an online cooking school and am quite active with the culinary community. I primarily write posts about what I research and learn along the way.
